Golden Eagles sweep season series with No. 14 Oklahoma State

TULSA – Oral Roberts held No. 14 Oklahoma State to three base hits to defeat the Cowboys, 3-1, and notch the clubs fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.

The Golden Eagles (33-16) scored three runs in the first before adding an insurance run in the fifth to stave off the Cowboys. ORU gave up just three base hits on the night to the visitors.

Rolando Martinez led the way at the plate for Oral Roberts, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI. Leadoff man Nick Rotola also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Freshman Trevor McCutchin (3-2) tallied his third win of the season after three innings of shutout baseball. McCutchin, an Owasso, Oklahoma native stuck out three of the 12 batters he faced.

Josh McMinn, Evan Eubanks, Grant Glaze and Brady Womacks also recorded time out of the bullpen and did not allow a run. Womacks, a junior right-hander from Pevely, Missouri recorded his 12th save of the season as he closed out the game. Junior Billy Lovvorn was hit with the only run of the night when OSU’s Dustin Williams homered in the sixth.

Sophomore Nick Roark kicked things off in the first with a one-out single up the middle. He would move into scoring position following a six-pitch walk to Noah Cummings. Martinez drove in Roark on a bloop single to center and Trent Shelton would collect RBI number four when he drove in Cummings later in the inning.

Martinez, a Bakersfield, California product, would get in the scoring action in the sixth when he drove in his second RBI of the night, sending Rotola to the plate and extending the ORU lead to 3-1.

Notables

  • The Golden Eagles close the gap in the all-time series with the win, trailing OSU by just one game at 34-33. ORU has won four-straight games over the Cowboys.
  • Oral Roberts has not lost a game to Oklahoma State at J.L. Johnson since the 1995 season.
  • Head Coach Ryan Folmar is now 5-2 against the Cowboys in his career.
  • The win marks the fifth win against a ranked team this season.
  • ORU finishes the season 4-1 against BIG 12 competition.
  • The Golden Eagles struck out 15 times on the night. Against the Cowboys on April 12, ORU struck out a season high 16 times.
