GOODWELL — He has a smile that is contagious and bronc riding skills that are undeniable. A veteran to the rodeo world, Oklahoma Panhandle State University graduate Cort Scheer of Elsmere, Neb. had earned nearly every accolade possible in the arena by the age of 30; except a world title. That final piece of the puzzle was put into place during the inaugural Elite Rodeo Athletes (ERA) World Championship inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas Nov. 11-13.

“There are no words. It’s been a long road, it’s been a great year. We had some great events. We had some awesome committees and a great world finals. It was a great way to cap off the year and it was a year to remember for sure,” Scheer said during his interview on Western Sports Weekly.

The ERA League of Champions was established through an invitation process that included the top professional athletes across all events. In total, 87 rodeo athletes representing more than 137 world titles comprise the ERA. In the saddle bronc riding, Scheer had to best 10 fellow top-notch bronc riders over a series of 11 tour stops and at the world championship. He did just that.

Never one to miss a chance at a good time, Scheer started the inaugural finale in his typical show-stopping style with an 85.5-point ride aboard the bronc, Good Times. He continued his consistent performance by scoring 82.5 points in the second round to place third and ended the event with his highest-marked ride of the weekend, 86 points on Bitter Robin.

When the final points were tallied, Scheer clenched his first world title in commanding fashion with a 1000-point advantage over Wade Sundell.

With this accolade added to his already impressive rodeo resume, Scheer will undoubtedly be classified as an elite bronc rider.
