Southeastern falls to Dixie State in D-II softball championship opening game

Dixie State got a three-run home run in the third inning and it would stand against Southeastern.

The Savage Storm fell to the Red Storm, 3-2, in the opening game of the NCAA Division II softball championship finals in Salem, Va.

Courtney Sherwin was 1-for-3 on the day, but her homer was the difference.

Southeastern (43-19) grabbed a run in the third and put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh picking up one more, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

MIndy McElroy pitched 6.2 innings and took the loss.  Michelle Duncan earned the win with a complete game for Dixie State.

Haley Strawn went 2-for-3 and had an impressive outing in the field for the Savage Storm.

SOSU will next face Wayne State (Mich.) at 1:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday.
