Alva’s tough defense shuts down Red Oak in battle of No. 1s at Mid-America Classic

Alva and Red Oak met in Ada on Monday in the Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic, both as the No. 1 team in their respective classes.

The Ladybugs made a statement about which No. 1 was stronger on this day with a 67-20 rout of the Lady Eagles.

Alva (6-0) scored the first 10 points in the contest and the smothering defense didn’t give up a field goal in the first quarter.

AHS coach Eric Smith said his team came out ready to play.

“I thought we came out and executed the game plan really well,” Smith said.  “We defended really well. We took away their high-low and made it tough for them to score. And our press bothered them at times.

“We got off to a really good start and shot the ball really well, especially from the three. We have a lot of different girls that can shoot the ball.”

The Lady Bugs made five three-pointers in the opening period and led 23-1 after the first eight minutes.

Smith said his team respected Red Oak (10-1) and what they bring to the table.

“No. 1 Red Oak, they’re a good team. They’ve got good post play and have guards that can shoot it. They beat Preston, who is No. 2 in our class. They do a good job and have great tradition.

“We were just ready to play.”

Jaden Hobbs had a game-high 16 points and was one of 11 Ladybugs to score on the day.  Bailey Forell had 13 points and was 3-of-7 from behind the arc.

“We’re definitely not a one-trick pony, for sure,” Smith said.  “Hobbs is a very good player, but Forell stepped up and made shots. Lora Riley can make shots and so can Morgan Shiever.

“Whitney Randall I think had 10 points tonight coming off the bench and Kally Gordon made shots as well.

“The main thing that gets us going is our defense. We have a really good defense.”

Good defense, indeed, as the Lady Eagles were held to just 8-of-45 shooting for 17.8 percent.

Alva will meet Plainview on Tuesday in the semifinal.  Class 4A No. 5 Plainview beat Class 5A No. 6 Shawnee, 45-44, in the opening game of the day.

Class 3A Washington and Class A Cheyenne met in another battle of No. 1s and the Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Bears, 19-13, in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Washington faces Class 4A Anadarko in the other semifinal, who defeated Class 2A Fairview, 55-38.
