SHAWNEE – Katie Godfrey’s two-RBI single in the seventh proved to be the game-winner as No. 2 seed St. Gregory’s downed No. 3 Doane (Neb.), 3-1, in the St. Gregory’s Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round Monday at Firelake.
The No. 11-ranked Cavaliers move on to play No. 10-ranked and top-seeded Mobile (Ala.) at 10 a.m. Tuesday in winner’s bracket action. Due to rain forecast for Wednesday, the remainder of the tournament is scheduled to be completed by day’s end Tuesday.
Godfrey, who entered the game with seven hits on the season, came through in a big way – pulling a 1-0 pitch down the right field line to score Jessica Nelson and sister Shannon Godfrey.
Teammate Ashli Hafford finished it off in the circle, improving to 12-3 with a complete-game, nine strikeout effort. She walked only one and scattered five hits.
Doane (33-12) got on the board first with a two-out RBI double by Sam Valadez in the bottom of the first. Hafford helped her own cause in the second, blasting her team-leading 10th home run over the wall in center to even the score.
The teams played to a stalemate until Godfrey’s heroics in the seventh.
Valadez led the Tigers with a 3-for-3 game. Courtni Clark and Randi Yousey led the Cavs with two hits each.
