COUNTRY CLUB, Mo. – The Northeastern State men’s golf team finished third at the 2015 MWSU/Holiday Inn Express Classic, which was held at the par-71, 6,582-yard St. Joseph Country Club.

The RiverHawks shot 287 in Tuesday’s final round to jump three spots from their overnight position into third at 31-over-par 883 (296-300-287).

No. 7-ranked Central Missouri won the event at 19-over 871 (297-295-279), while No. 14 Central Oklahoma finished second at 22-over 874 (294-295-285). Winona State finished two strokes back of NSU at 33-over 885 (291-299-295), and Southwestern Oklahoma State rounded out the top five at 37-over 889 (300-299-290).

The tournament is the second MIAA-sanctioned event in 2015-16. The results from the final standings will be used to help determine the conference champion in April.

Senior Brent Williamson recorded the first tournament victory of his career after he fired a 2-under 69 in the final round to finish at 3-under 210 (71-70-69). Michael Schmitz of Winona State placed second at 2-under 211 (69-70-72), and they were the only two competitors to finish under par.

Williamson shot 2-under on the par-3’s for the tournament and was the only player in the field at even par or better. He also led the field in par-4 scoring at 4-under.

True freshman Garrett McDaniel tied for 12th at 7-over 220 (73-76-71), while junior Tate Williamson tied for 16th at 9-over 222 (72-79-71). Junior Marc Johnson landed in a tie for 58th at 20-over 233 (82-75-76), while redshirt freshman Justin Allenback shot 27-over 240 (80-84-76) to tie for 76th.

This is the second-straight season that an NSU men’s golfer captured an MIAA-sanctioned individual tournament championship. Former RiverHawk great Zach Tucker won the Washburn Invitational last April.

Northeastern State will be back in action Oct. 19-20 when the team travels to Wichita Falls, Texas, to compete in the Midwestern State Invitational.
