Kissimmee, Fla. — Brittney Stephens snapped a 1-1 gridlock by scoring with just 2:57 left in the second overtime period to propel the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels to a 2-1 victory over the Warner University Lady Royals in both team’s first match of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament at Austin Tindall Park in Kissimmee, Fla.
The third-seeded Lady Evangels, now 1-0 in pool play, had been tied with the sixth-seeded Lady Royals since the 13th minute of the opening half.
Cici Mitchell had put the Lady Evangels on top with a score at the 7:28 mark off an assist from Rochelle Bohuslavicky, but the Lady Royals answered soon after on a goal by Maria Diaz in the 13th minute.
It was also Mitchell that assisted on Stephens’ game-winning score for the Lady Evangels.
The Lady Evangels (11-8-1) outshot the Lady Royals 24-15 overall, led by eight shots from Power and seven from Mitchell.
Both goalkeepers were superb in the net, as Kaitlyn Whitten stopped 10 shots for the Lady Evangels and Sarah Bergkvist recorded 11 saves for the Lady Royals.
The Lady Evangels will attempt to take another step toward a championship game berth when they continue pool play tomorrow evening (Dec. 1) against No. 7-seeded Columbia International University at 6 p.m. (CST).
