OKLAHOMA CITY — With the Sooner Athletic Conference redrawing the Men’s Soccer Postseason Tournament seeds, the Mid-America Christian University Evangels have now qualified for the tourney, the league announced tonight Wednesday.
The Evangels are now the eighth seed and will play at top-seeded Wayland Baptist University on Friday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 pm in Plainview, Texas.
The shuffling was due to Southwestern Christian University being forced to forfeit wins over MACU and Wayland Baptist University due to a player not serving a mandatory one-game suspension following five cautions.
Originally, the SCU Eagles were the third seed, but have now dropped to the fifth seed in the tourney after the forfeitures.
WBU is unbeaten in league play with an 8-0-1 conference mark and has now been awarded the regular season league championship after having shared the title with John Brown University.
“This was a difficult but necessary consequence after learning of the situation,” SAC Commissioner Stan Wagnon said.
“In this case, the rules of soccer very clearly require a forfeit to the opposing team for all games in which the player participates illegally. While it is not ideal to make changes to a bracket just days before the tournament begins…getting it right matters most and I appreciate the cooperation of all involved to ensure that.”
The following is the updated SAC Men’s Soccer Standings after the forfeiture ruling.
1. Wayland Baptist, 8-0-1
2. John Brown, 7-1-1
