BETHANY – Southwestern Christian University came from behind to knock off nationally-ranked Texas Wesleyan and give head coach Jon Mack his 300th career win Saturday at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
The Eagles (14-11, 8-8 SAC) withstood a 3-point barrage from No. 24 Texas Wesleyan and erased a 16-point, second-half deficit en route to the one-point victory.
Shawn Scott led SCU with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds. Scott shot 5-for-9 from the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-thrown line.
Victor Diaz followed with 14 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Darius Madkinadded 10 points off the bench.
The trio of Fredd Richardson III, Trevar Mayon and Michael Williams finished with eight points apiece. Mayon also grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes.
Austin Lobo finished with five points and eight rebounds on the night.
Texas Wesleyan got a 3-pointer from Ryan Harris to stretch its lead out to 58-42 with 10:37 to go in the second half. Diaz answered with a 3-pointer of his own to spark a 19-4 SCU run that cut the SCU deficit to 64-63 at the 5:08 mark.
Back-to-back buckets from Mayon gave SCU its first lead since early in the first half at 67-64 with 3:49 to go.
Williams buried a clutch 3-pointer to give the Eagles a five point advantage with just over a minute to play.
Both teams traded free throws down the stretch. With SCU leading by one point with four seconds left, Harris missed his potential game-winner from 3-point range.
SCU will return to action against No. 15 Oklahoma City at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City.
