BETHANY – Oklahoma City University cruised to a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference victories over Southwestern Christian 7-0 and 14-0 Thursday afternoon at SCU Field.
The Stars were once again led by strong performances from pitchers Jaden Shores and Georgia Wall, as the two combined to throw 20 strikeouts and allow only four hits and no runs. OCU, ranked sixth in NAIA softball, improved to 32-5 overall and 19-1 in the SAC. Southwestern Christian dropped to 10-24 on the year and 3-13 in conference play.
Wall, a junior from Marlow, Okla., tossed seven shutout innings and recorded eight strikeouts in game one of Thursday’s doubleheader. She hasn’t given up a run since March 15th’s contest against Mid-America Christian. In game two, Shores threw six shutout innings and tied her season-high in strikeouts with 12.
While Oklahoma City’s pitching was dominant, the Stars’ bats were equally as impressive. OCU put up 14 runs in a single game for the fourth time this season, and have scored 10 or more runs in 12 games this year. The Stars also tied a season-high for homeruns in a single-game with three, the third time they’ve accomplished that feat.
Brittany Perez and Bailey Whitmore each led OCU with four hits apiece on Thursday. Perez, a junior from Ventura, Calif., added five runs and three RBIs, including two homeruns in game two. Whitmore, a junior from Oklahoma City, added three runs and an RBI.
Including Perez and Whitmore, seven different Starts ended the doubleheader with at least three hits. Laci Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., had three hits, four runs and four RBIs. She had two doubles in game two and blasted a homerun in game one. Julianne Abeloe and Jaci Smith each finished with three hits and three runs scored.
Also notching three total hits against the Eagles was Kennedy Jackson and Abby Meador. Meador, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., smacked two doubles in game two and added an RBI. Jackson, a freshman from Moore, Okla., produced one run scored and an RBI.
OCU plays next at 2 p.m. Thursday for a doubleheader against Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City.
