ATCHISON, Kansas – Oklahoma Baptist downed Saint Mary, 21-1, in a neutral site game held at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. It’s the first time OBU has started a season 2-0 since making the move to Division II.
Lauren McCormack did the heavy lifting again for OBU with five goals and three assists, setting the tone early with two of the Lady Bison’s first three goals. She also finished with a game-high 12 draw controls.
The Lady Bison opened up the game on an 8-0 run keyed by goals from McCormack, Taylor Skomp, Emery Kennedy and Devin Miller. Saint Mary scored their only goal of the game at the 10:58 mark in the first half, but McCormack’s third goal of the game with 8:39 on the clock gave OBU a running clock that would be in effect for the rest of the match. Miller scored one final goal to send the Lady Bison into halftime up 12-1.
Madison Gordon immediately kicked off the scoring in the first minute of play after the break as OBU out-scored the Spires, 9-0, in the second half. Lauren Scott, who subbed on for Courtney Barnickle with the game well in hand, picked up her first two saves.
“As good as the defense was, only allowing four shots on goal, it was great to see what this offense can really do when it’s firing on all cylinders,” said OBU head coach Jordan Beech. “As long as everyone is thinking for everyone else and talking it out, it’s exciting to see how far we can go this year.”
Kennedy (4), Morgan (4) and Miller (3) joined McCormack with hat tricks, while Gordon and Skomp each tallied two goals. Morgan Friend accounted for one goal. Barnickle picked up her second win of the season while recording one save in 30 minutes of action.
Oklahoma Baptist (2-0) looks to close out February with a third win when they take on Maryville tomorrow in St. Louis, Missouri, at 12 p.m.
