SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The top ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (59-3, 36-0 SAC) and No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett College (45-16) met up in an elimination game at the NAIA Softball World Series. The Drovers scored early and often to advance in the tournament with the 6-1 victory.
The Drovers struck first, scoring SIX runs in the bottom of the third inning. GGC scored once in the top of the fifth, but it was way too little, way too late, as the Drovers sent the Grizzlies back home to Georgia.
The Drovers offense was led by Destinie Lookout (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) and Randa Hatter(JR/Stratford, OK)’s powerful performances. Lookout and Hatter each finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run batted in. Karlie Velasco (SR/Del City, OK) contributed a 2-for-3 performance that included one run scored. Dakota Clouse (SR/Blanchard, OK) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI. Tarah Madron (JR/Konawa, OK) also added a single in the win.
Emily Cerny (SO/Newcastle, OK) pitched the first three shutout innings, striking out two batters in the process. Cerny improved her record to 30-3 and lowered her earned run average to 0.60.
Falon Howell (SO/Duncan, OK) pitched four solid innings in relief, allowing just one run as she struck out one batter.
The Drovers will now prepare to face No. 3 Oklahoma City University on Tuesday, May 28 at 2:47 PM CT in Springfield, Mo.
