TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State finished its weekend going 4-0 with a pair of wins Saturday. The RiverHawks blasted Haskell for a 20-0 thumping in five innings in the opener and later took out Bacone 5-1 in the nightcap. Eighth-year head coach Clay Davis won his 200th game at NSU with nightcap win. It is also the quickest NSU hit ten wins as an NCAA program and best start since 2007, the last time they qualified for the National Tournament.
“It’s special to get 200 wins at one place; its a testament to all the kids who played here and my coaching staff,” Davis said. “To have the longevity to get to 200 wins here, I’m only the third head coach here in the history of this program, so it should tell you how special this place is.”
In Game One, Cameron Conrad hit her first career homer in leadoff the game, and NSU (9-3) never looked back. The RiverHawks dropped five runs in both of the first two innings, and the sent 13 batters up in a seven-hit inning where they scored eight.
NSU pulled most of their starters in fourth and managed to score two more on the Indians in their final at-bats.
The 20 runs are an NCAA era high for the RiverHawks, besting the previous mark by two.
In Game Two, Northeastern State (10-3) made plenty of contact with the ball, with four of their first ten outs being shots deep into the outfield. After a Megan Green triple, Conrad hit a double to center for the game’s first run. Elbon followed up with her second homer of the day to give NSU a 3-0 lead.
Following a scoreless fourth, NSU hit back-to-back homers with Sierra Crick and Jess Schuler, clearing the right field fence.
The Lady Warriors broke up the shutout after an error by NSU put a runner on to start the inning.
Northeastern State will head for Springfield next to play in five games at Drury.
