GOODWELL – Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s athletics logo has earned a spot in the championship round of the NAIA LogoWars competition on Twitter! The Aggies’ will faceoff versus Dordt University in the finale beginning Wednesday, May 13, beginning at 6 p.m. (CDT), after defeating McPherson College, 53-47 percent, in the semifinal voting.
Voting can be done at the Twitter site @NAIAFBALL, the sponsor of the contest, by simply scrolling down to the OPSU logo once voting opens on Wednesday. @NAIAFBALL provides the largest independent coverage of NAIA football.
“The Aggie Nation came up big in the semifinals,” OPSU Sports Information Director Dave Beyer said. “It was neck-and-neck overnight on Friday and then on Saturday our fans made a huge push in the final hours.”
In the semifinal round, Panhandle State and McPherson provided a record voter turnout in the contest. In all, the two institutions from adjoining states turned out 3,109 votes between them, which was more than 1,000 votes better than the next highest total in the entire six rounds. For its part, the Aggie faithful were responsible for 1,648 votes versus the Bulldogs, the most by any individual school thus far.
The Aggies’ foe in the finals – Dordt University – has posted two-consecutive lopsided wins. In its semifinal match-up versus Central Methodist, the Defenders built a huge lead on Day 1 of the voting and were never threatened, winning 59-41 percent and taking their place in the finals.
“We are going to need an even larger turnout in voting for the finals,” Beyer added. “Dordt has shown that they have an awesome fan base through its first five foes in voting. I expect it will be a battle all three days between two outstanding groups of fans.”
Thus far in the LogoWars contest, Panhandle State has topped, in order: Valley City State University, Doane University, Northwestern College, Southern Oregon University and Dakota State, prior to its win over McPherson this past weekend.
Panhandle State welcomes everyone to cast their vote for the Aggies beginning on Wednesday evening. The voting will end Saturday, May 16, at 6 p.m. at @NAIAFBALL via Twitter.
