Langston takes down No. 18 Wiley
Monday night, Langston (6-11, 6-6 Red River) came away with an 81-74 victory, snapping a three game losing streak. LU handed #18 Wiley (17-2, 11-1 Red River) their first Red River Athletic Conference loss of the season.
The Lady Lions were without Head Coach Dave Johnson after he was forced to serve a one game suspension due to his late ejection in the LSU-Shreveport game on Saturday. After the win, Johnson said, “Great game. Our gameplan was well executed by my Assistant Coach [Natasha] Doh.” A key part of that plan was junior Amber Coleman, who had another outstanding game for the Lady Lions. The Passaic, NJ forward had 17 points on 7-11 shooting. Teammate Tayla Vaughn was another big factor grabbing 18 rebounds, 14 on the defensive glass. As a team, Langston had 58 boards to Wiley’s 38. Throughout the game, LU played tenacious defense, holding the Wildcats to 29% shooting. Wiley hit only 1 3-pointer in 12 attempts on the night.
Next up: Texas College. The Lady Lions head to Tyler for a 5:30 PM matchup on the 24th.
MEN
Balanced Lions too much for Wiley
Chuck Sanders’ 18 points were just part of an easy 76-54 victory over Wiley (11-8, 6-6 Red River) at C.F. Gayles Field House. The win keeps Langston (8-11, 5-6 Red River) in the hunt for the final spot in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament. They are competing with Huston-Tillotson and Jarvis Christian for the 8 seed.
Sanders led the team in scoring, but three other Lions contributed double figures. Joel Clarke had 16, David Harris 13, and Emil Clayton 10. Sanders, Clark, and Clayton also had 5 boards apiece, part of the team’s 48 rebound performance last night, good for a +13 rebounding margin. LU shot 52% from the field compared to 31% for Wiley. The Wildcats were 5-25 from 3 with Anthony Jackson and Dominic Jones particularly struggling. They were a combined 1-10.
Langston plays Texas College in Tyler on Thursday night. TC is ranked #24 in NAIA Division I this season. The tip is at 7:30.
