OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University put together a three-shot advantage through 36 holes of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Monday at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
The defending NAIA women’s golf champion Stars posted a 301-294–595 to lead Redlands, who shot 299-299–598 on the par-72, 6,004-yard course.
Caroline Goodin spearheaded OCU with a 75-71–146, good for fourth place. Goodin, a freshman from Oklahoma City, nailed six birdies Monday to trail Lina Aguillon of Redlands by four strokes.
“I was very pleased with our performance,” OCU coach Marty McCauley said. “I was happiest with the way the ladies carried themselves on the course and represented OCU. Overall, it was a terrific start to the season. It will be a fun opportunity to go out and compete tomorrow.”
The Stars’ Elia Folch carded a 74-74–148 to be tied for fifth. Folch, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, tied Aguillon for the tournament lead with by making par on 28 holes.
Kailey Campbell, a freshman from Oktaha, Okla., added a 77-73–150 while notching par 27 times for OCU. Anna Mikish, a freshman from Choctaw, Okla., had a 75-76–151, and Katie-Lee Wilson, a freshman from Owasso, Okla., compiled a 78-78–156.
Those playing as individuals from OCU were Abby Thompson, who recorded a 78-75–153, Raegan Barnes (85-77–162) and Taylor Cusack (85-84–169).
Charter Lawson of Redlands buried the lone eagle among the field on the par-5, 493-yard seventh hole.
The temperature rose from 73 degrees at the start of the day to 88 degrees. The wind blew up to 15 mph with a 21 mph gust. Rain fell briefly during the morning before storms moved into the area after play concluded.
The tournament’s final round starts 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
