STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team opened the 2017 season Friday with a pair of wins in the TexAnn Invitational at Tarleton State.
The Bronchos, ranked 18th in the country in the Preseason AVCA Top 25, knocked off Henderson State 3-1, before dispatching Texas A&M-Commerce 3-0 later in the day.
“We did well today,” UCO head coach Edgar Miraku said. “We had some good play all around. It’s really just nice to get the season started.”
UCO opened the day with Henderson State, and fell behind after dropping the first set 25-20. The Bronchos then had to scratch out a 25-23 win in the second and third set to take a 2-1 in the match. With a chance to win, Central asserted its dominance and won the final set 25-16.
In the afternoon contest, UCO looked in control throughout the match. The Bronchos cruised to a 25-12 win in the first set, took a 25-18 win in the second, and earned the victory with a 25-20 win in the third.
Central plays two more in Texas Saturday. UCO will face Midwestern State at 12:30 p.m. and host and 25th-ranked Tarleton State at 5:30 p.m.
The Bronchos open the season with nine-straight road games before hosting the MIAA/GAC Crossover on Thursday, Sept. 14.
