The Cordell girls won their second consecutive track title on Saturday, and left no room for doubt at the Class 2A and Class A State Championship Track and Field Meets at Carl Albert High School.
Realistically, the Lady Blue Devils almost had enough for the win in 2A Girls after Day One.
Cordell finished with 139 points, outdistancing itself from second place Wynnewood by 75 points. The Lady Savages amassed 64.
By the end of the meet, the only question was whether Cordell would finish with the win in the 1,600 meter relay. And in a repeat championship with little drama involved, the relay team provided it.
Cordell’s team of Addison Kleiwer, Kylee Isbell, Catilyn Welch and McKenna Morley led for two laps, but was passed by Pawhuska. On the final lap, Morley passed Pawhuska’s Kianna Taylor in the last 50 meters to put an emphasis on the Lady Blue Devils dominant title.
However, each of the other three championships came down to that last race.
In Class A, the Pond Creek-Hunter girls and Texhoma girls were tied with 61 points apiece headed into the 4×400. Texhoma’s team of Kaitlyln Campbell, Sarah Ferguson, Braelyn and Randi Yates finished first giving the Lady Red Devils the 20 points and the title for the third straight year.
Hooker’s boys trailed Okemah, 79.50-78, heading into the 1,600 relay and needed at least a sixth-place finish to pick up the necessary two points to take the lead and win in Class 2A. Running in the first of the two heats, the Bulldogs – John Godfrey, Dayton Metcalf, Kyler McGaha, Jacob Johnson – won the heat and their time of 3:32.10 was good enough for second overall in the event, behind only Colcord, and Hooker made it back-to-back state titles.
And in Class A boys, Oklahoma Christian Academy ran a strong race throughout and hung for at the end for the win in the 4×400 relay and the 20 points that came with it. But Turpin also ran a strong race, and needing only a third place finish in the relay to secure the title, got just that and 12 points to stay ahead for an 87-83 advantage over OCA.
Turpin’s win was the sixth overall for the program and first since 2009.
Also of note on the weekend was the effort of Ringwood’s Isai Rodriguez. The junior set two state meet records, one on Friday and one on Saturday.
In the 3,200 meter run, Rodriguez had a time of 9:27.10, which was 10 seconds better than the record he had set in 2015. The next day, he ran the 1,600 meter run in 4:27.15, breaking a state meet record that had stood for more than three decades.
