WICHITA, Kan. – Baylor Harvey capped a brilliant sophomore season by winning the 2014 Heartland Conference Cross Country Championship leading the Rogers State men’s cross country team to a third-place finish Saturday at the Cessna Activity Center.
The Oologah, Okla. native earned Runner of the Year honors and first-team all-conference accolades becoming the first-ever conference champion in Hillcat cross country history. Harvey traversed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 45.58 seconds to edge Oklahoma Christian’s Bryant Keirns by three seconds for his third-straight individual title to finish the season.
Senior Chandler Smith closed his career in the Hillcat navy and red joining Harvey with Heartland Conference First-Team All-Conference honors placing 11th with a time of 26:33.43.
RSU sophomore Marchez Coriz covered the course in 26:39.63 to place 15th overall garnering honorable mention all-conference honors.
Freshman Ryan Alexander (22nd) and junior Garrett Dyson (23rd) crossed the finish line back-to-back in times of 27:02.93 and 27:04.38, respectively pushing the Hillcats ahead of five-time defending conference champion Dallas Baptist.
Another senior, Oscar Reyes, put the finishing touches on his RSU career running to 28th in 27:17.78 while freshman Trey Taylor closed the day in 45th at 29:11.68.
Host Newman put together a dominant performance winning the conference team title as all five scorers placed inside the top 10 placing ahead of second-place Oklahoma Christian by 29 points.
