LANGSTON – Timely free throw shooting paved the way for the Langston Lady Lions to edge by the St. Gregory’s Cavaliers 74-67 on Tuesday night at C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse.
Tied at 67-67, Langston’s (2-2) Shanequa Gaston knocked in one-of-two from the charity stripe to give the Lady Lions a small lead with 1:28 remaining.
Following an empty possession by the Cavaliers, Gaston answered the call with back-to-back in the paints to give Langston an insurmountable 72-67 advantage with 14 seconds remaining. The Cavaliers came up empty on a three-point attempt by Taylor Hooks and turnover by Kelsie Howgard sealed the non-conference win for Langston.
Gaston finished with 17 points on five-of-eight shooting and grabbed seven boards in the process; Sydney Spencer chipped in 11 and Shantrice Picking pumped in 10 points.
Offensively, Langston knocked in 44 percent (26-of-58) on the night while connecting on 15-of-19 free throw attempts. The Cavaliers finished their night at 33 percent (25-of-74) but committed 27 turnovers that led to 21 points for the Lady Lions.
Langston (2-2) plays at Oklahoma Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla. on Nov. 10. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
