TAHLEQUAH – Shelby Brewster closed out Northeastern State’s senior night with a game winner in the 17th minute of extra time to beat Central Oklahoma 1-0 on a frigid Friday night.
The contest was the first time NSU has been pushed to extra time this season and it was the first regular season overtime game winner since Nov. 2, 2014 where the RiverHawks beat Southwest Baptist 2-1 in Tahlequah.
The goal by Brewster was on a breakaway that sailed left of the UCO keeper and it was the first goal of the season for sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla.
Northeastern State had chance in the second half to go up on the Bronchos and in the 56th minute Mariah Nicolet beat the UCO defender but her shot sailed just a foot over the top crossbar.
Central Oklahoma (7-8-2, 4-4-2 MIAA) had advantages on shots (15) and corner kicks (9), edging the RiverHawks by a pair.
Meg Smith recorded her sixth shutout of the season with five saves in front of the net.
Friday’s win locked the RiverHawks in as the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MIAA Tournament which they will host the opening round on Wednesday with an opponent and time to be determined this weekend.
Northeastern State is now 14-2 overall and 8-2 in MIAA play, they will close out the regular season on Sunday at Southwest Baptist.
