KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 11-ranked Northeastern State women’s golf team cruised to the 2016 MIAA Championship title by 20 strokes Wednesday.
The three-round tournament, which was held at the par-72, 5,893-yard Swope Memorial Golf Course, was dominated by a RiverHawks team that led wire-to-wire. They finished at 58-over-par 922 (306-299-317) to secure their first MIAA crown and their first conference championship since 2006 (Lone Star Conference). This is also the sixth league title in school history.
Finishing well back of the pace was three-time defending champion and No. 25 Central Oklahoma, who ended the event at 78-over 942 (321-312-309). No. 49 Lindenwood placed third at 104-over 968 (324-322-322), while Missouri Western State was fourth at 116-over 980 (341-322-317) and Central Missouri finished fifth at 138-over 1,002 (341-332-329).
Junior Baylee Price regained her individual championship that she won as a true freshman in 2014. She lapped the field to the tune of 11 strokes and also went wire-to-wire, finishing at 3-over 219 (71-72-76). The title gives Price four this season and six in her career. She also became the first women’s golfer in Northeastern State history to win multiple conference tournament championships.
NSU was the only team in the field to have all five participants land inside the top 12. True freshman Ebba Moberg tied for third at 16-over 232 (77-75-80), while fellow true freshman Kelsey Lumpkin landed in solo seventh at 19-over 235 (79-75-81). Seniors Kayla Schroeder and Charter Lawson placed 11th and 12th, respectively. Schroeder shot 24-over 240 (79-77-84), while Lawson carded 26-over 242 (79-83-80).
Both Price and Moberg were named to the MIAA All-Tournament Team.
The RiverHawks will now compete May 1-3 at the 2016 NCAA Central Super Regional Championship. The event will be held at Awarii Dunes Golf Club in Axtell, Nebraska. NSU will officially be chosen to compete at the event when the NCAA makes final tournament selections April 25.
