FORT SCOTT, Kan. – The SWOSU Rodeo teams returned to competition over the weekend in Kansas, competing in the Fort Scott CC NIRA Rodeo. SWOSU brought home a fourth-place finish on the men’s side while the women’s team took sixth place.
Ricki Konze finished second in the average of breakaway with times of 4.2 and 4.0 seconds, the latter winning her a share of the short round at the event. Kylee Cahoy was third in the long round of breakaway in 2.9 seconds before a no-time in the short go kept her out of the average. Mikayla Harrison and Stacey Bailey placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the average of goat tying while Shanna Simmons took fourth in barrel racing.
For the men’s team, SWOSU was led by Sloan Smith and Alex Phelps, who placed second in the short round and average of team roping. Smith pulled double duty and also placed fifth in the average of calf roping. Nathan Hatchel was second in the long round of bull riding with a score of 82 points, which was good enough for third in the average despite not having a second qualified ride.
“It seems we have been plagued with injuries early this spring,” SWOSU Head Coach Mike Visnieski said about the event. “The squad performed well this weekend in spite of that and I appreciate their relentless attitude.”
SWOSU Rodeo returns to action on March 31 – April 2 at the Garden City CC Rodeo.
