The Langston Lady Lions started to get through injuries and other issues and looked better and better as the 2013-2014 season wound down. Â They showed they were worthy of the postseason this year and could be even better in time.
LU put together an eight-game winning streak in the home stretch and right in the middle of it, Lynette Holmes made a statement of her own.
Three games into a five-game home stand and four games into that streak, Langston routed No. 10 Our Lady of the Lake, 106-77, keyed by the 50 points recorded by Holmes. Â The leading scorer in the NAIA, Holmes put up her best numbers of the season against a quality opponent.
She was 20-of-31 from the field (65 percent), including 2-of-7 from behind the arc, and connected on all eight free throws she attempted.
She also notched a double-double on the evening as she brought in 10 rebounds.
Holmes earned NAIA National Player of the Week honors for her performance that week.
She finished the season with 849 points – an average of 26.5 ppg – both tops in the nation and put up those numbers shooting 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.
It was the highest single-game point total by any player – women or men – in any collegiate level in 2014 and was the third highest single-game output in the NAIA in 2013-2014.
