The Union City Tigers traveled to Minco for the first round of the Bulldog Classic on Thursday. They faced off with Boone-Apache in a instant thriller.
Union City eventually won, 63-62, in the biggest comeback of the season for the Tigers after trailing by as many as 11.
The Tigers were down 38-30 at the half and fell even further behind in the third quarter while only scoring 10 points. However, Coach Rennels and the Tigers made up for it in the fourth quarter scoring 23 points.
Jason Schieber came up with a big basket with six seconds left to complete the comeback.
The Tigers used the three-pointer as their main source of points. They hit nine throughout the game. Josh Michalicka hit two in the final quarter to help the Tigers claw their way back.
Tiger seniors Landon Le and Michalicka both had 15 points. Fellow senior, Cash Everett also added 14 points. The hero of the night Jason Schieber also ended up in the double digits with 10 points.
The Tigers will look for revenge on the Lookeba-Sickles Panthers on Friday in the second round of the tournament. The Panthers beat the Tigers in the opening game of the season this year.
The UC Lady Tigers also competed in the Bulldog Classic and in the first round took on the Minco Lady Bulldogs, facing them for the second time in the past week.
Union City could not get shots to fall in this first round game and eventually fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 63-36.
Sophomore Hunter Johnson scored a career high 18 points in the loss. Senior Morgan Englebretson provided the Lady Tigers with a spark from behind the arc with three 3-pointers ,but this was not enough to hang with the tough Lady Bulldogs.
Union City will look to bounce back Friday at 1:40 p.m. in the second round of the Bulldog Classic with a chance to move into the trophy games on Saturday for consolation.
