MUSKOGEE – Youth carried the RiverHawks to second place through two rounds of the 20th NSU Men’s Golf Classic on Monday at the Muskogee Country Club. RiverHawks freshman Carlos Gomez led the way in his first collegiate event with a 133 (66-67) and is in second on the individual leaderboard. Northeastern State carded a 557 (274-283) and only trails Lindenwood by four shots heading into Tuesday’s final round.
2004 was the last time NSU won its own invitational and Josh Boswell in 2009 was the last to claim medalist honors.
Redshirt-Freshman Grant Hynes had the team’s season lowest score with 141 (69-72) and is tied for 23rd overall. Freshman Tyler Ashman and Jax Johnson both shot 142s and were tied for 26th place. NSU’s lone senior, Hunter Pennington shot a 146 (74-72) and is tied for 50th place.
With an eleven under-par, the RiverHawks held the lead for most of the day. Lindenwood caught NSU in the late afternoon thanks to a nine-under (275) in the second round.
Northeastern State shot a one-under, 283 in their second loop through the Muskogee Country Club.
Right on the RiverHawks’ heels by one shot is Central Missouri who fired off a tournament low 272 in the second round.
For medalist honors, Gomez is chancing down Arkansas Tech’s Francois Jacobs who shot a 131 (63-68).
Garrett McDaniel carded a 148 (73-75) and Griffin Matthias had a 158 (81-77) playing as individuals.
The RiverHawks will tee-off on the front nine starting at 9:30 a.m. for Tuesday’s final round with Lindenwood and Central Missouri.
