OKLAHOMA CITY – To provide relief for the thousands of Texans affected by Hurricane Harvey and uphold the “Oklahoma Standard,” Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City and Southwestern Christian University out of Bethany, Okla., are partnering with the Sooner Athletic Conference to collect donations for storm victims.

Both of the universities’ volleyball teams were originally slated to play in Houston this weekend for a tournament. Because of the devastation in the city and surrounding communities, the tournament has been canceled.

Now, MACU and SCU will square off in a non-conference volleyball contest at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1 in the Gaulke Activity Center on the campus of Mid-America Christian University. Admission will be free of charge, but the schools are asking for monetary donations at the door.

“As Christian Institutions,” MACU volleyball head coach Mike Freeman explained, “We are committed to using sports to show the love of Christ whenever we can. Knowing the devastation that is plaguing southeastern Texas right now, this seemed like a great way for us to put our faith into action and help those who are hurting because of this storm.”

All donations will be sent to Parkgate Community Church in Pasadena, Texas, a southern suburb of Houston. The church has initiated a disaster relief fund for affected members of their congregation as well as the community at large. The worship minister at Parkgate Community Church, Kenneth Spiller, is a MACU alum.

Of the effort to help, MACU Athletic Director Marcus Moeller said, “We are proud to have so many of our alumni using their vocation to serve Christ and His people. Kenneth Spiller is someone we’re very proud of, and I am ecstatic to be able to help Parkgate Community Church in their efforts to raise funds to support and serve their local community. We urge you to come out Friday night and donate to such a great cause.”
