SWOSU SID Doug Self earns media award from AVCA

LEXINGTON, Ky. – SWOSU Sports Information Director Doug Self has been selected as the Grant Burger Media Award winner for the NCAA Division II SID category by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.

Nominations for the Grant Burger Media Award are made by the head coaches who are members of the AVCA.

“I can’t imagine a candidate fitting the qualifications for the Grant Burger Media Award more than Doug Self,” SWOSU Head Volleyball Coach Josh Collins said. “Doug’s tireless commitment to full coverage of SWOSU Volleyball has advanced our program in ways I didn’t know possible. Doug goes above and beyond his job description to make sure that the promotion of Volleyball at Southwestern Oklahoma State University stays right on the cutting edge of the trends in sports coverage. It is an honor to work alongside him and this award is well deserved.”

As the Bulldogs’ Sports Information Director, Self serves as the primary media contact for all 13 of SWOSU’s athletic programs. With a staff featuring one graduate assistant and four student workers, he guides all media relations for the athletic department, including in-game statistics, live video streaming and social media along with pregame and postgame content for the Bulldogs official website, www.SWOSUAthletics.com.

“This is a very humbling honor, but I’m excited to be chosen for the Grant Burger Award by the AVCA,” Self said. “Our volleyball program – under the excellent leadership of Coach Collins – has made great strides the past few years and it’s been my privilege to be able to help tell their story. At SWOSU, you can see volleyball growing in popularity and I look forward to bringing continued coverage of the Bulldogs to our fans.”

A native of Valley Falls, Kan., Self is in his fifth year as the Sports Information Director at SWOSU after joining the staff in January 2013.
