AMARILLO, Texas – Cameron knocked out rivals Midwestern State 3-1-1 in match play at the Lone Star Conference Championship for their third title in a row and eleventh championship.
The Aggies have won three out of the last four championships and are the first three-straight winners since Northeastern State repeated three times from 2005 to 2007.
“Winning the last three titles in a row really legitimizes the program and that it wasn’t just luck that got us here,” said head coach Jerry Hrnciar. “We want to give a lot of credit to West Texas A&M for hosting and the Lone Star Conference for dealing with a less than ideal situation in moving the tournament in the last second.”
Originally, the tournament was slated to be held in Frisco, Texas but the site was changed on Sunday due to rain and course accessibility; however, it did not affect the Aggies.
“Before today’s round I told the team that we have the deepest team here and in match play we played really well. This was one of our best showings of the spring and sets things for us in motion for the NCAA Super Regional.”
Daniel Nielsen won by ten shots over Midwestern and was the overall individual winner after beating teammate Cullen Stahl in the first playoff hole; Nieslen and Stahl were tied with a 142.
Stahl finished even with his MSU counterpart and had a tournament high 25 par scores in the 36 holes played. Freshman Dario Gabriel was up six shots to claim CU’s second win and finished tied for tenth place with a 150 (75-75). Weston Ward clinched the Aggies in the tournament by one shot and joined Stahl and Nieslen as All-Tournament with a 146 (74-72).
Zander Winston was even with MSU late but shot five-over after getting stuck in a bunker on hole-11; the Aggie senior lost by six shots but finished in ninth place with a 149 (73-76).
In the consolation bracket, West Texas A&M lost to Texas A&M-Commerce 3-1-1.
The Lone Star Conference does not have an automatic qualification for the NCAA Super Regional, but Cameron should be among the 20 teams entered in the South Central/West Super Regional that will be held on May 2-4 in Las Cruces, N.M.
Final selections for the NCAA Super Regional will be announced on April 22.
