PORTALES, N.M. – Cameron held off a late Eastern New Mexico charge and Brandi Leal broke the program’s season three-point record in a 68-63 win at Greyhound Arena on Wednesday night. The win keeps CU right in the hunt for a Lone Star Conference regular season championship with the Aggies a half game back of West Texas A&M in the league standings with four games to go.
The Lady Buffs happen to be CU’s next opponent on the schedule after defeating Midwestern State in Canyon to give the Ags sole possession of second place in the LSC with a 10-2 record.  Additionally with the win against the Zias, the Aggies cannot finish below, Tarleton State, Texas Woman’s, Eastern New Mexico, Angelo State, or Texas A&M-Kingsville in the LSC standings.
The Cinderella team in the LSC has won four in a row and nine of their last ten contests.
Leal who needed three triples to break Chelsea Stamp‘s program record of 72 three pointers in the season was broken in the first half after Leal knocked in four; she would finish with five for the night and 15 points. Jazzmine Robinson earned her seventh double-double of the year with game high 21 points and she added 11 boards. On the defensive end, DJ Vallier came up with eight rebounds and she had three blocks.
ENMU (8-13, 4-7 LSC) was lead by Jordyn Cooper who had 17 points and Sarah Stinnett added 15.
The night wasn’t clean for CU with 35.1 percent shooting on the floor but it was enough to best ENMU who shot 31.2 percent. However, rebounding and second chance points gave the Zias a shot in the arm with 55 boards and 16 points off of 15 offensive boards. Cameron countered with 48 rebounds and seven second chance points.
Cameron led as many as 13 points in the second half but that lead would dwindle down to three with 14:36 left after a trey by the Zias to make the score 47-44.  Jade Herl gave CU some distance on ENMU two minutes later with a three-ball to make it a three possession, 57-49 ballgame. The Zias again came on the attack after four minute scoring drought and knocked in back-to-back jumpers to get within a pair (61-59) with 3:40 to go. However, Robinson made a clutch three-pointer, her only one of the night, in the next to possession to give CU a five point lead.
The Aggies had to weather one more storm though, and a missed second free throw by ENMU proved to change the course of what could have transpired for Cameron.  The missed free throw was followed by a ENMU three pointer with 34 seconds to go, had that shot a line gone in Cameron would have been looking at a tied ballgame. Instead, the Zias were forced to foul and Cameron went a perfect 4-4 at the line to ice the contest.
Cameron (13-8, 10-2 LSC) will have their pink on for Saturday’s contest against West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. with CU holding annual their cancer awareness game; pink shirts will be for sale in the gym lobby for $5 with the money raised going to the Play4Kay foundation.
