The Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic is getting set for its 40th edition this month.
Once again, the tournament will host eight of Oklahoma’s premier girls basketball teams. The event will be held at the Kerr Center on the campus of East Central University in Ada.
Bruce Plunk, athletic director at Latta High School and president of the Mid-America Classic board of directors, said he excited about the great field of teams heading to Pontotoc County to compete.
“We have four defending state champions in this year’s class, along with some other really talented teams,” Plunk said.
“We just think this one will be as good as advertised and we hope that the fans will get out and come and watch because we think it will be a real treat. We are looking forward to all of the hoopla that goes with this tournament and we think it will be one to be remembered.”
Half of the field is coming off a season that culminated in a state title: Woodward (Class 5A), Newcastle (4A), Seiling (A) and Lomega (B).
The tournament goes back to 1976 and has been played every year with only an interruption in 2000. It is named in honor of local coaching legend, Bertha Frank Teague, who led the Byng girls basketball program from 1926-1969.
Her record was an incredible 1,157-115 and she was the first woman inducted in the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
This year’s event will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, through Friday, Dec. 30.
