KINGSVILLE, Texas – Senior libero Brittnee Altic reached 1,000 career digs as the Aggie volleyball team battled in a four set match to Texas A&M-Kingsville in their final contest of the season.
The Cache, Okla. native needed just three digs going into the match to reach the milestone and took care of the pressure early, recording her 1,000th in the first set of Saturday’s match. Altic finished the match with a match-high 21 digs, giving her 557 for the season and 1,018 for her two year career at CU. Altic also had four service aces and three assists in the match.
Katherine Manning also had a strong final match of the season, notching her second straight 40-plus assist contest with 41 against the Javelinas. She set up Shantalle Demirjian, who led the Aggies, 13 times for kill and Ashleigh McFatridge 12 times.
Defensively, Cameron continued to be strong on the blocks as they have all season, recording 13 total blocks as a team, with Brandy Carr leading the way with seven, Demirjian and Paige Dixon each adding six and McFatridge chipping in five.
The Aggies were just a few plays away from winning the first set, battling back and forth with TAMUK throughout the first half of the frame. The Javelinas started to pull away late thanks to a 3-0 run and a 4-1 stretch that helped them build up a 23-16 lead. CU rallied late with three straight to cut the lead to four, and then after the home team reached set point, four straight capped by a Peyton Little service ace to get to within one at 24-23. However, a kill by Madison Brabham closed out the set 25-23 for Kingsville.
Cameron continued their late success in the first into the second and built up a 9-4 lead after a 5-0 fueled by kills from Demirjian and Brittany Lawson. The Javelinas battled, but could never takeover the lead as CU hit .300 on the attack in the 25-18 win.
Despite hitting another strong .286 in set three, the Aggies slow start led to TAMUK building up a 9-3 lead. They continued that success and then used a big 6-0 run late to secure a 25-15 win in which they hit .486 with 18 kills and no errors.
Much like set one, the fourth was a back and forth battle, with neither team pulling away until midway through the frame. Cameron made the first move with four straight points to go up 17-14, but the Javelinas charged late to take back the lead at 23-21 with after a 5-1 stretch. After a kill by McFatridge tied up the set, TAMUK’s seniors answered, as both Haley Hutchinson and Brabham recorded kills to end the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
On senior day, the two seniors led Kingsville with 16 kills each, while added 23 assists and 12 digs to notch her 13th triple-double of the year. Emily North added 23 assists to the Javelinas winning effort, while Nicole Murff lead the team with 19 digs.
Cameron ends their 2018 season with a 4-26 overall record and a 2-18 LSC mark, while Texas A&M-Kingsville ends up 18-13 overall and 10-10 in league matches.
