MUSKOGEE – Bacone College has withdrawn its membership in the Sooner Athletic Conference effective at the conclusion of the 2018-19 school year.
Bacone entered the conference in 2015-16 after competing in the Red River Athletic Conference since 1998.
“The SAC and its member institutions appreciate the opportunity to have collaborated with Bacone College, its administration, staff and student-athletes, as well as the impact of their contributions made over the past four years. We wish nothing but the best for Bacone College and its constituents,” SAC commissioner Stan Wagnon said.
The Warriors took the 2016 SAC men’s cross country championship. Jackson Thomas won the individual SAC crown, while Clay Mayes took coach of the year to lead Bacone to the title. In 2017-18, Joseph McAleavey of Bacone collected the first 174-pound league championship in the inaugural SAC wrestling championships.
The SAC’s lineup for 2019-20 will feature 11 full-time members – Central Christian College, John Brown University, Langston University, Mid-America Christian University, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Southwestern Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma and Wayland Baptist University.
SAC members boast of winning 107 NAIA national championships over the years.
