LAWTON, Okla. – For the first time since 2006 the Cameron University men’s basketball team defeated Midwestern State in front of over 1,600 fans at the Aggie Gym on Wednesday night. The win was also a program best six Lone Star Conference victories in a row breaking the previous record set in the 2010-11 season.
The Aggies (10-5, 6-3 LSC) were led by Craig Foster who hit a pair of critical three-pointers late in the second half and ended the night with 19 points. Andrew Thomas “Country” chipped in 11 points, four boards, and a block, while Djuro Majstorovic and Tim Johnson added nine points apiece.
Midwestern State (11-6, 7-2 LSC) was led by Cam Adderley with 16 points, and Kevin Grayer added 15 points respectively.
In the first half Cameron jumped out to an early run leading 14-4 at the 13:45 mark. The Mustangs however fought back getting within three (16-13) by the 10:18 mark and both teams began trading buckets for the remainder of the half. Cameron would leave to their locker room with a slim 27-24 lead.
The Aggies, through the first 20 minutes, shot a steady 52.6 percent (10-19) from the field and 40.0 percent (2-5) the arc. While the Mustangs shot 32.0 percent (8-25) from the field and 28.6 percent (2-7) from downtown.
The second half was without a doubt one of the most exciting halves played in the Aggie Gym in recent years. Both teams would take leads and traded buckets. The Aggies would pull away by eight points with 6:56 remaining, but they would let the lead slip by and Midwestern would take a one point lead with 2:36 left.
Cameron would have the lead with less than 90 seconds left before MSU’s Derek Kaster tapped in a layup tying the game at 63 one minute left. The Aggies would have possession of the ball with the shot clock off and Foster would be fouled with three seconds left.
Foster would sink the first shot at the line but then missing the second giving MSU one last chance with 1.8 left on the clock. Following a pair of timeouts MSU was not able to get a play off in the remaining time giving CU the 64-63 wins.
Cameron would shoot 52.4 from the field (22-42) and nailed nine three-pointers. Midwestern State shot 46.2 percent (24-52) from the field and out-rebounded Cameron by one (26-25). The Aggies will have a chance to move into first place in the LSC traveling down to Wichita Falls on Saturday.
