WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The Cameron University women fall to Midwestern State for the second time in four days as they lost the game at MSU today, 49-69.
Cameron was down through the first 10 minutes of the game but a 9-4 run, highlighted by a couple of Brittany Harrissteals and layups, just before the eight minute mark in the half gave CU the lead going into the third media timeout.
Midwestern State went on the attack the last eight minutes of the half. They racked up 20 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers and nine second chance points. MSU was ahead 33-26 at the half.
CU shot 50% from the field in the first half, but 14 turnovers gave the Mustangs too many opportunities to score and get ahead of the Aggies. Cameron hit two of their five three point attempts and four of their five free throws.
Cameron was down 12 rebounds to 14 and had six more turnovers than the Mustangs after the first 20 minutes.
Chelsea Stamp finished the half with seven points, leading the Aggies, and Harris was right behind her with six points.
On the other side of the court, MSU was also 50% from the floor in the first half; hitting 20% of the three point shots and 50% of their free throws. Leading the Mustangs in scoring at the half was Shambreka Jones with 10 points and Shatoia Gober with eight points.
MSU went on a 13-2 run to start the second half, and would keep their big lead through the rest of the game.
Poor shooting plagued the Aggies in the second half as they shot 27.6% from the field. They were only able to hit two of their 11 shots from behind the arc, but hit 5-7 from the charity stripe. Cameron also had 10 turnovers in the second half, which led to nine points for the Mustangs.
Stamp and Harris were the leading scorers for the Aggies, with 10 points each. Harris also had two steals and two assists in the game. Ali Brown contributed eight points and five boards, Sharna Hoosier had seven points in only 12 minutes, and Lacy Reinke was the leading rebounder with nine boards and four points.
Cameron shot 36.7% in the game, with a 25% three point percentage and going 9-12 from the free throw line. They had 24 turnovers in the game, which led to 26 points for MSU. CU was also out-rebounded 34-31.
MSU was 50% from the field, 25% from behind the arc, and 50% from the charity stripe. They were led by Kirsti Degelia with 14 points and Jones with 13 points.
This loss puts the Aggies at 4-13 overall this season and 3-8 in Lone Star Conference matchups. MSU is now 14-3 with a 9-2 LSC record.
CU will return to the Aggie Gym for their next two games, as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville, Thursday Jan. 31 at 6 p.m., and Incarnate Word, Saturday Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.
