LAWTON – The Aggies swept their opening Lone Star Conference series as they won both games of a doubleheader against Texas Woman’s on Sunday, 4-2 and 5-2.
Cameron struck first in game one, scoring one run in both the first and second innings, and then two more in the third. Madyson Marvulli kicked it off with an RBI single in the first, and in the second, Makaylah Ramirez got caught in a rundown in between third and home until the TWU third baseman dropped the ball and she came home to score. In the third, both Marvulli and Ramirez delivered RBI singled to give the Ags the 4-0 lead.
The Pioneers scattered five hits over the seven innings with their two runs coming on solo homeruns in both the fifth and the sixth inning.
The two homers were the lone blemishes on Bethany Hines‘ line as she went the complete game with just five hits given up and five strikeouts. She is now 6-1 on the season.
In game two, the Busby twins started off the game the scoring with two solo homers, with Callie Busby hitting one in the first inning and Brenna Busby driving one out in the third.
After a scoreless fourth, the Aggies broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kaylyn Smithtripled to with one out and then B. Busby singled to the third baseman to put runners on the corners. Kaitlyn Alvarado then bunted and Smith came home as the Aggies ran the squeeze play for the first run of the inning. B. Busby then came around to score on a wild pitch for the second run and then Marvulli drove in pinch runner Peyton Welch on a sacrifice fly to right.
Rylee Willmon gave up just two hits in her seven innings of work, giving up a run in the sixth on an RBI single and then one more in the seventh on a solo homer. The junior struck out four batters and walked just one for her fourth win of the season.
For the doubleheader, C. Busby led CU with three hits, while Marvulli, B. Busby, Ramirez, and K. Smith each had two. Marvulli led CU with three RBI and B. Busby led the way with three runs scored.
The two wins move the Aggies to 11-3 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play, as Texas Woman’s falls to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Cameron will face their first road conference series next weekend as they travel to UT Permian Basin for a three game slate, Feb. 23-24.
