Marchesani’s ace highlights Stars’ efforts in The Mid-South

NEWTON, Kan. – Anthony Marchesani of Oklahoma City University sank a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at Sand Creek Station Golf Course on Monday in The Mid-South.

The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA men’s golf, stood second place through 36 holes with a 289-290–579 on the par-72, 7,086-yard course. Jamie Warman led OCU with a tie for 11th place.

Third-ranked William Woods (Mo.) shot a 282-281–563 to hold the lead.

“I’m proud of how they fought hard,” OCU coach Kyle Blaser said of the Stars. “We didn’t make many putts. We didn’t click very well. My hats off to William Woods because they have a good team. Tomorrow’s a new day, and we have ground to make up.”
Warman, a senior from Perth, Australia, carded a 69-75–144, seven strokes behind tournament leader Saad Milan of Texas-Brownsville. Warman made par 24 times Monday.

Scott Verplank supplied OCU with a tie for 15th place with a 73-72–145. Verplank, a junior from Edmond, Okla., scored a par on 27 holes. Garrison Mendoza tallied a 72-74–146 to tie for 17th. Mendoza, a sophomore from Clinton, Okla., buried eight birdies for the Stars.

Marchesani, a junior from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, played his final four holes of the day at 4-under-par. Marchesani nailed his first ace ever in his second round of the day. Marchesani recorded a 77-71–148.

Jay Cox contributed a 75-73–148 for the Stars. Sam Russell led OCU individuals with a 71-73–144, while Jett Johnson had a 71-77–148.

Other OCU individuals were Austen Fuller (74-75–149), Matthew Cheung (73-78–151), Thomas Holtzman (79-77–156) and Wyatt Robson (88-88–176).

The temperature climbed from 62 degrees at the start of play to 82 during the day. Winds blew up to 13 mph.

The last round of the tournament starts 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Newton, Kan.
