ADA – Senior Braxton Reeves made school history more than once in the East Central University men’s basketball victory, 86-69, over Cameron at the Kerr Activities Center on the annual Field Trip Day.
With over 500 local elementary school students watching, Reeves tallied 45 points to set the Tigers (6-4) and Great American Conference records for points in a game and became the first ECU player to score 40+ points in back-to-back games. He is also just the third to score over 40 in two games in the same season, joining Roland Miller and Leonard Cooper.
Reeves finished the game with 45 points, 11 triples, three assists, two steals, five rebounds and zero turnovers, while going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. His 45 points broke the record of 44 by Roland Miller (Feb. 19, 1998) vs. Northeastern State, a game that current ECU head coach Ja Havens was playing in for NSU.
Reeves was joined in double-digits in the point’s column in the game by seniors Brett Cannon and Ishmael Donzo, with 16 each. Senior Aly Hudgins led the team on the glass, with eight rebounds.
The teams traded runs in the opening minutes of the game, but kept things close through the first half, with the Tigers leading 42-38.
The Aggies (9-4) came out strong in the second half, going on an 8-0 run in the first 2:30 to gain a four-point advantage (42-46). Cameron kept up the pressure and took a 10-point lead, with 14:23 left to play.
However, that is when Reeves went on a solo 13-0 run for ECU, over the next two minutes, to regain the lead. The score remained close over the next two minutes, but a 15-1 run by the Tigers, over the next three minutes, gave ECU control for good and had the lead out to as many as 15.
The Tigers kept up the pressure in the final minutes of the game and increased the lead to as many as 19 on the way to the 86-69 victory.
Both teams shot well for the game, with ECU holding a slight 49.2 percent to 44.4 percent lead overall. The Tigers clinched the win beyond the arc, making 11 to the Aggies seven.
ECU will now get a quick break before heading to San Antonio, Texas for an exhibition game against UTSA, December 29 at 7 p.m. The next regular-season games for the Tigers are set for Jan. 5 and 7 with GAC battles at Harding and Arkansas Tech.
