TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northeastern State football team fell to Washburn 38-19 to open up the season Thursday night at Yager Stadium.

The RiverHawks dropped to 0-1 on the year, and the Ichabods started the campaign with a 1-0 record.

Sophomore quarterback Dimonic McKinzy made his debut in style, as he threw for 283 yards and one touchdown on 23-of-44 passing. He also did not throw an interception. He carried the ball 13 times for 29 yards and added one rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Defensively, senior linebacker Darian Morris tallied a game-high 11 tackles, while redshirt junior linebacker La’More Wise added 10 in his first game donning the green and white.

Jake Horner got Washburn on the board first when he took a 63-yard pass from Derek McGinnis to the house just five minutes into the game. McGinnis needed just 14 completions on 24 passes to throw for 275 yards and two scores. Horner hauled in four receptions for 158 yards and the one score.

Senior kicker Eddie Garcia scored NSU’s first points of the season with a 43-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter. He also added a 30-yard kick early in the fourth to become the first Northeastern State kicker to make two field goals in one game since Drew Patton connected on a pair against Lincoln on Nov. 9, 2013.

Perry Schmiedeler made three field goals in the second quarter – including two in the final 59 seconds after a blocked punt – and the two teams exchanged touchdowns as the Ichabods took a 23-10 lead into halftime.

Bryce Chavis caught a 30-yard strike from McGinnis on WU’s first second-half drive to push ahead by 20, and Washburn would stay ahead for the 38-19 victory.

The RiverHawks will now set their sights on the home opener, which will be contested at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 against Lindenwood.
