MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northeastern State football team fell 66-6 to No. 11 Northwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Stadium.
The RiverHawks (0-5, 0-5 MIAA) were outgained 654-271 by the Bearcats (4-1, 3-1 MIAA), with the home side holding a 308-183 advantage in passing yards and 308-271 lead in rushing yards.
Sophomore quarterback Johnny Deaton was 14 of 25 for 139 yards passing. He also had one touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jahmai Coleman and two interceptions. Senior wide receiver Jermaine Sherman led the offense with five catches for 45 yards.
Junior defensive back Victor Williams had a career-high 12 tackles to lead the NSU defense.
Northeastern State scored on its opening possession when Deaton found Coleman wide open for a 17-yard passing strike less than seven minutes into the game. Junior kicker Drew Patton had the PAT blocked as the RiverHawks took a 6-0 lead.
Tyler Shaw returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards to the NSU 16-yard line, and Jordan Simmons scored on a two-yard rush three plays later to give the home team the 7-6 lead.
Simmons would later add another score on a 25-yard scamper at the 4:09 mark, and the home team held a 14-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Todd Adolf nailed a 25-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter, and the Bearcats added three touchdowns in the final 11:16 of the frame to put NWMSU ahead 38-6 heading into intermission.
Shaw caught a 14-yard pass at the 12:26 mark of the third, and James Franklin scored two plays later after NSU lost possession on a botched option pitch to give the Bearcats a 52-6 lead.
NWMSU added 14 points in the rest of the game to take the contest 66-6.
Trevor Adams threw for 272 yards and three TD’s on 19-of-27 passing for Northwest Missouri State. Franklin had 97 yards rushing and a touchdown, and backup quarterback Brady Bolles added 60 yards rushing and two TD’s on the ground.
The RiverHawks will return to Doc Wadley Stadium for their Homecoming next weekend. NSU will play host to No. 7 Missouri Western State at 2 p.m. Oct. 6.
