Southwestern rodeo rides at Kansas State to open spring season

MANHATTAN, Kan. – SWOSU Rodeo headed north to open the spring portion of their schedule and competed at the Kansas State Rodeo over the weekend. The SWOSU Women’s Team came away with a fifth-place finish while the Men’s Team took eighth place at the event.

The Bulldogs got scoring in Goat Tying from Ricki Konze and Sierra Meadows, who placed fourth and eighth, respectively in the average. Konze was 7.4 seconds in the long round before taking fourth in the short round in 6.9 seconds while Meadows was fifth in the long round in 6.9 seconds and split seventh in the short go with a time of 8.4 seconds. Taylor Lagasse teamed with Alex Phelps to place second in the average of Team Roping with runs of 7.5 and 11.4 seconds.

Phelps also had a strong showing in Steer Wrestling, placing sixth in the long round in 6.2 seconds and seventh in the short round in 8.1 seconds to split fifth and sixth place in the average. Paul Melvin was eighth in the long round in 6.9 seconds and held on for ninth in the average despite no time in the short go. SWOSU had two Saddle Bronc riders receive a score in the long round, with Will Gaillard (61 points) and Taran Knox (48 points) placing ninth and tenth, respectively. Nathan Hatchel won the long round of Bull Riding with a ride of 85.5 points, which also placed him second in the average.

“We had some really good performances this weekend and I think everybody was excited to get back out there after a little time off,” SWOSU Head Coach Mike Visnieski said of his team’s effort. “I felt the team was focused and ready and we will continue to get after it for the rest of the season.”

SWOSU Rodeo returns to action on March 9-11 at the Fort Scott Community College NIRA Rodeo.
