For the second time in as many weeks, a Great American Conference school begins a national search for its next men’s basketball coach.

It was announced Monday afternoon that Charlie Schaef is resigning at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Schaef compiled a record of 57-57 in four years as the lead man in Weatherford.  His Bulldogs were 12-16 overall in 2013 and 10-10 in the GAC.  SWOSU upset Arkansas-Monticello, 77-69 in overtime, in the GAC postseason tournament, before falling to Arkansas Tech in the semifinal.

Southwestern made it to the GAC final in 2012, in the league’s inaugural tournament.

“The SWOSU community would like to thank Coach Schaef for his contributions to the men’s basketball program these past four years,” SWOSU Athletic Director Todd Thurman said. “We are very appreciative of his efforts.”

Southwestern announced that a national search for the next head basketball coach will begin immediately.

East Central University’s Rodney McConnell resigned last week from the Ada school.
