In 2016, Oklahoma City went 32-5 with its first victories in the NAIA Championships ever among a bunch of program milestones: highest national ranking ever at No. 11, first Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title, second SAC Tournament championship, first 30-win season since 2008, the SAC’s 11th undefeated conference record and first 18-0 SAC record.

“We are excited to have Jason Muñoz joining the Oklahoma City University Athletics family,” OCU athletic director Jim Abbott said. “Jason brings great experience developing and managing successful volleyball programs and has a solid commitment to academic success. I have every confidence that he will continue to build on the success of our program both academically and competitively.”

Muñoz said, “This is a great opportunity with a very respected athletics department. I’m excited to take the next step in my coaching career becoming a head coach. It’s an honor to be joining a very solid team that had such a great year last year.”

Last year, Oklahoma Baptist wrapped up the season as National Christian College Athletic Association Championship semifinalists with a 23-15 record and a tie for third in the Great American Conference with Muñoz’s help. The Lady Bison concluded the season at No. 7 in the NCCAA national poll. In 2015, Oklahoma Baptist finished as NCCAA runner-up.

Muñoz aided Oklahoma Baptist in going 230-84 the past eight years with four SAC regular-season championships, three SAC Tournament titles, an appearance in the NAIA Championship Opening Round and two trips to the NAIA Championships since 2009. Oklahoma Baptist posted four 30-win seasons and a 53-match winning streak in league play.

Muñoz guided seven NAIA all-Americans, three NCCAA all-Americans, 35 all-conference performers, two SAC player of the year award winners, three SAC setters of the year, one SAC hitter of the year, an SAC libero of the year recipient and a GAC defensive player of the year. In addition, Muñoz coached seven NAIA scholar-athletes and seven CoSIDA academic all-district honorees.

He served as assistant volleyball coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State before joining the staff at Oklahoma Baptist.

Muñoz attended Southwestern Oklahoma State, earning his bachelor of science in parks and recreation management and a master of education degree in sports management in 2007.
