KEARNEY, Neb.– Kalin Winkler’s second-period fall ignited a late surge that carried top-ranked Central Oklahoma past No. 14 Adams State 29-12 Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Midwest Duals.

The Bronchos trailed 12-9 after losing three straight matches in the middle of the dual, but Winker’s fall at 174 pounds started a dominating closing stretch. Heath Gray followed with a technical fall at 184, Dalton Abney had a major decision at 197 and Shawn Streck polished it off with a third-period pin at heavyweight.

UCO, which trounced Western Colorado 40-9 in their opening dual, improved to 9-0 on the season.

“Our big guys really came through for us,” head coach Todd Steidley said. “We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be at a few weights, but it was good to get back on the mat again. We did some good things, but there’s still a lot of work to do.”

Central won the first three matches to take a 9-0 lead, but the Grizzlies got a fall and back-to-back wins to move in front 12-9.

It was all UCO after that.

Winkler racked up a 14-4 lead before getting his team-high eighth fall of the season at the 3:30 mark, then the top-ranked Gray had six takedowns and two near-falls in a 20-5 technical fall. It was the 48th straight win for defending national champion.

Abney had three takedowns and more than five minutes riding time in scoring an 8-0 shutout before Streck polished off the comeback with a takedown clinic. The 260-pounder amassed an amazing 11 takedowns – seven in the first period alone – before ending the mismatch early in the final stanza.

The Bronchos had no trouble in their first dual of the day, earning bonus points in all eight of their wins.

UCO got falls from Winkler, Abney and Streck, while 133 Tanner Cole and 141 Nate Keim had technical falls and 125 Paxton Rosen, 157 Ty Lucas and Gray major decisions.

UCO returns home Sunday, Jan. 30 to host Central Missouri at 2 p.m.
