WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Zander Winston and Daniel Nielsen finished one and two at the Midwestern State Invitational but the Aggies would fall one stroke back of first place overall on Tuesday at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
Winston fired off a round low 69 to card a 281 (77+72+69) to pass Nielsen for first place overall. Nielsen led the 18 team field through two rounds on Monday but a 75 in the final round would put him back one stroke behind with a 219 (74+70+75).   Both Aggie golfers had the tournament high with 11 birdies.
Teams on the course had plenty of sunshine but strong winds and fast greens proved to be tough to overcome for some.
“Having two teammates finishing one and two in this large of field is a rarity and I can only think of one other time it’s happen since I’ve been here,” said head coach Jerry Hrnciar. “Overall it was a challenge with the wind down here and we couldn’t get down any putts.”
Cameron scored a 301 in the final 18 holes but St. Mary’s would card four shots better to overtake the Aggie team for the overall championship with an 898. The Aggies finished with a 302 and 295 on Monday and edged out Southern Nazarene by two shots.
Justin Jang completed the final round with a 78, with Quinton Tews and Devin Whipple carding 79s.  Jang would card a 230 (77+75+78) which put him tied for 29th place, Tews was tied for 50th place with a 234 (74+81+79), and Whipple was tied for 66th after scoring a 239 (81+79+79).
The Aggies were well ahead of the other Lone Star Conference schools at the invite with West Texas in eighth place; Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce were both tied for 11th.
Cameron have one more tournament in their fall schedule and they will compete on Oct. 26-27 at The Tribute Classic at The Colony, Texas.
