LAWTON – Zach Johnson, Cameron University’s head cross country coach, made history on Wednesday by signing the first female runner to join the Aggie program.

Taylor Esquivel signed to run at Cameron University after two successful years at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas. She finished in eighth place in the UIL 5A District 6 Championship and 27th in the UIL 5A Region 1 Championship this fall.

Esquivel’s personal best in a cross country race is 19:05, while her best in the 400 meters is 62.08, in the 800 meters is 2:28.94, and in the 3200 meters is 12:13.

Coach Johnson is very excited to get his first member of the women’s program and sees great potential in Esquivel.

“Taylor should play a big role in getting our women’s program off to a good start,” Johnson said. “She has good leg speed and improved a great deal both her junior and senior seasons. She has only run seriously for two years and has a good work ethic so she should continue to improve during her Cameron career.”

The Aggies hope that the signing of Esquivel is just the start of building a great women’s cross country and track and field program. They will officially start competing in the fall of 2018.
