LSC preseason poll has CU men’s hoops fifth, women eighth

MEN

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Cameron University men’s basketball team was picked fifth in the 2012 Lone Star Conference Preseason Men’s Basketball Poll. The league’s preseason polls reflect the opinions of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region.

Last season the Aggies finished in fifth in the LSC with an 10-8 conference record and an overall record of 15-11.

Tarleton edged Midwestern State for the No. 1 spot by seven points, as both teams earned 12 first-place votes each, for totals of 269 and 262, respectively. The Texans and Mustangs shared last year’s championship with identical 15-3 league records.

West Texas A&M was third with 246 points and four top votes, Incarnate Word fourth (166), and Cameron fifth (139).

Texas A&M-Kingsville was sixth (130), Abilene Christian seventh (112), Angelo State eighth (95 and one first-place vote), Texas A&M-Commerce ninth (91) and Eastern New Mexico tenth (85).

Furthermore,  WTAMU’s Donald Sims was tabbed as Preseason Player of the Year. Sims was the popular choice with votes on 25 of the 29 ballots.  The remaining four votes were split amongst four other players.

The LSC champion will be the regular season winner determined by league games, while the postseason tournament winner is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the conference’s automatic qualification.  The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament set for March 6-9 in Allen, Texas.

Cameron will start their season in Lawton on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. with their Alumni Game.

 

WOMEN

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Cameron University women’s basketball team was picked eighth in the 2012 Lone Star Conference Preseason Women’s Basketball Poll. The league’s preseason polls reflect the opinions of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region.

Last season the Aggies finished in fourth in the LSC with an 11-9 conference record and an overall record of 15-11.

Tarleton State is the top choice to defend its Lone Star Conference title, according to the 2012-13 LSC preseason women’s basketball poll announced Thursday.

The TexAnns earned first-place votes on 20 of the 31 ballots for a total of 323 points. West Texas A&M finished second in the poll with seven first-place nods and 303 points.

Midwestern State was third with 262 points and one top vote, Angelo State fourth (212 and two first-place nods) and Incarnate Word fifth (211).

Texas Woman’s was tabbed sixth (176), Abilene Christian seventh (170 and one top vote), and Cameron eighth (157). Texas A&M-Kingsville (98), Eastern New Mexico (93) and Texas A&M-Commerce (41) rounded out the poll.

Additionally, ACU’s Mackenzie Lankford was honored as Preseason Player of the Year.  Lankford was the top choice on 14 of the 31 ballots cast.  Tarleton’s Kiara Wright and Peyton Adamson received four nods each, while four others collected the remaining votes.
